Room 2 News!

Up, Up, and Away…The focus letter this week is the letter Uu. This week the children enjoyed playing an umbrella game. The children enjoyed ducking under the umbrella to find something that starts with the letter Uu sound.

Day and Night Workers…Today we discussed day and night jobs. In the following center time, the children enjoyed drawing pictures of day and night jobs. We were very impressed with how all the children tried their best and added detail to their pictures. Well done, Room 2 !

Where Is the Sun?…We explained to the children that you can determine the position of the sun in the sky based on a shadow. The children enjoyed standing with their backs to the sun and noticing the position of their shadows. We predicted where our shadows might be later in the day. Where were our shadows?

Room 2 News!

What’s In The Sky?… This week we began the big idea, I see how the sky is different during the day and at night. We enjoyed discussing the day sky and the night sky. We used a thinking map, a double bubble map, to compare and contrast the day sky and the night sky. In the following center time, the children created a beautiful piece of art depicting the day sky and the night sky. We were very impressed with the children’s wonderful creativity!

Flips and Turns With Shapes…We encouraged the children to flip and turn shapes to create shape puzzles. We encouraged the children to see that the shapes stay the same no matter which way they are turned or flipped. This afternoon the children used the actions flip, rotate, turn, and slide to create a picture of something that they might see in the sky.

Sun and Shadows…We discussed with the children that the sun gives us light, heat, and shadows! Today the children enjoyed using flashlights and creating shadow puppets.

This week our special friend Sofia is the teacher helper. Sofia is a very hard-working student. She is determined to do well at school. We always enjoy observing Sofia’s enthusiasm as she tries her very best at our different class centers. We also enjoy listening to Sofia’s wonderful ideas. She always tries her best to participate in our class discussions and she always has a very thoughtful response. Sofia is self-motivated to succeed. Way to go, Sofia! Your light is shining brightly! Well done! We love you, Sofia!

Happy birthday, Jimmy! We hope you enjoyed your special day. We loved celebrating with you! We love you, Jimmy!

Counting in the Garden…The children enjoyed the counting book Counting in the Garden. Room 2 enjoyed acting out the action words in the book. In the following center time, the children enjoyed creating their own counting story.

How Many All Together?… The children had fun creating a bug counting story. The children enjoyed hiding some of the bugs under a leaf. We encouraged the children to count the group of ants and to count the group of bees and to count both groups to figure out how many bugs were there altogether.

A Flower is…This morning we encouraged the children to brainstorm describing words for flowers. Thinking of describing words is challenging for this age group. We encouraged the children to write a sentence describing their flowers. We explained a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period. We encouraged each child to read his or her sentence.

Room 2 News!

How Do Plants Grow?… On Monday we jumped straight into our new learning unit, Nature All Around Us. The first big idea is I can plant a seed and watch how it grows. The children enjoyed sharing their experiences with seeds and looking at different types of seeds. The children created a collage to show what the plants might look like as they grow from their seeds. Today the children enjoyed planting seeds. Hopefully, we will be able to send home the children’s seedlings in a couple of weeks!

How Many All Together? …In math this week we are encouraging the children to count how many there are in each group and then counting how many there are all together. We are encouraging the children to use addition sentences such as Two apples and three apples together are five apples.

What the Sun Sees/What the Moon Sees…This is a big book this week. The children enjoyed reading this big book with me. We encouraged the children to listen carefully to the describing words. In the following center time, the children enjoyed creating a sun and moon mask. The children will use the masks to retell the story What the Sun Sees/What the Moon Sees.

Room 2 News & Tomorrow is an SJS Spirit Day!

A Fair Share…This week in math we introduced sharing and dividing. We encouraged the children to think about how they can share so that each child has an equal, or same, amount. We demonstrated one way we could share e.g. alternate giving each child a crayon, saying Here’s one for you, here’s one for you, here’s one for you, and so on. We counted how many crayons each child had and asked the children whether it was a fair share way to share.

My Home Address…This afternoon we began thinking about our home address. We explained it is important for children to know their address (if they get lost or have to call 911). The children enjoyed drawing a picture of their home and writing the number of their home on the picture. We will be assessing whether your child knows their address for their final report card.

Letter Review Aa-Ss…This week we have been reviewing the letters Aa to Ss. The children enjoyed working together to create an alphabet book for the letters Aa to Ss. We were very impressed with how quickly the children could name the letters Aa to Ss and think of words that start with each letter sound. Well done, Room 2!

Mrs. Sheffert and I would like to wish everyone a happy and blessed Easter. We have enjoyed a beautiful Lenten journey in Room 2! Our Lenten journey was a journey of prayer and kindness. The children are ready to celebrate Easter! Enjoy the break everyone and we will be excited to see everyone on Monday, the 12th.

How Does Your Salad Grow?… Yesterday the children enjoyed the book How Does Your Salad Grow? We discussed the diagrams in the book. We encouraged the children to create a diagram of a plant. We discussed the functions of the stem, leaf, and root.

This Is Letter Ss…We also continued to think about the letter Ss. Linked to the letter Ss sound, the children enjoyed creating a silly sandwich. This was a great cutting activity too. We were impressed with the children’s scrumptious sandwiches!

The Easter Story…The children are enjoying the Easter story. We are hoping that by Easter the children will be able to retell the story of Easter. Yesterday we discussed Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting of the Last Supper. The children also enjoyed painting the Last Supper during the following center time.

This week our special friend Maggie is the teacher helper. Maggie is our Room 2 cheerleader! She often provides words of encouragement and praise to her teachers and the other students in our class. For example, Maggie will often rub my shoulder and I always say “Thank you, Maggie. I needed that.” and Maggie often responds “It’s okay, my mom needs it sometimes too.” Which of course always makes me laugh! Maggie will often tell the other students how much she likes their work. Every time her kind words make their day! Maggie’s compassionate and caring nature is one of her many wonderful gifts that we love. Also, we always enjoy observing the boys reaching out to Maggie to play a game with them. With younger twin brothers Maggie is always able for their sometimes fast and tumble games. You go, Maggie! We hope your Irish eyes will always be smiling…We love you, Maggie!

Room 2 News!

What Are Healthy Foods?… We discussed everyday foods and sometimes foods. We encouraged the children to name foods from the food categories fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, and protein. The children worked together to create a healthy foods poster. Linked to the big book The Beastly Feast we encouraged the children to create a healthy dish for the feast. We encouraged the children to include food from the food categories fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, and protein.

What Do You Like Best?… The children made a great start on this week’s math mat. We were very impressed with how well the children were able to read a bar graph and create a bar graph. We will continue with this math mat next week.

Best I Can Be…We encouraged the children to think about things they are good at. We explained how eating healthy makes these activities possible. In their journals, the children completed the sentence frame Healthy food helps me________________. Today the children also enjoyed tracing and writing the capital and lowercase letter Ss.

Room 2 News!

This is Letter Rr…The children enjoyed comparing and contrasting the capital R and the lowercase r. The children used a thinking map, a double bubble map, to compare and contrast the capital R and the lowercase r. We were very impressed with how nicely the children traced and wrote the capital R and its lowercase partner. Well done, Room 2!

People Who Help…We encouraged the children to think of people who help us when we are sick or hurt. We encouraged the children to think of a time when they had trouble doing something and knew they needed help from someone. We explained one of the most important things about getting hurt or feeling sick is knowing that you can get help from someone who knows what to do.

Which Holds More?… We continued to think about capacity today. We explained capacity as how much a container can hold. The children enjoyed predicting the capacity of different containers. The children had great fun predicting whether a cup, a bowl, or a cylinder would hold more. We filled the different containers to find out which container could hold more. Which container had the biggest capacity?
